The “Striped Pig” story dates back to 1838, when the Fifteen Gallon Act was enacted in an effort to curb perceived excess drinking in America. Creative purveyors worked around the restrictive act by charging a thirsty customer to see a live striped pig, and then rewarding said patron with a glass of “free” alcohol (coincidentally the price of pig-viewing admission was equal to the value of the drink). The striped pig image later became a representation of freedom from over-regulation and taxation in political cartoons all over America.
